VIRTUAL CRIB IS "FALLING SLOWLY" FOR "ONCE"
Cribbies Shocker as Irish Musical Wins Top Prize; Cribbies Canon Established

Ten years into the awarding of the Cribbies, an upset has finally come along to rival the legendary triumph of HENRY FOOL in 1999's first annual awards ceremony. ONCE, a ramshackle musical that was the subject of little pre-awards speculation, swept past heavy favorites JUNO and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN to take three Cribbies, including Best Picture. When the award was announced, audible gasps were heard in the Cribbies Ballroom; stars Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova were visibly shaken as they accepted the award. "Winning an Oscar is one thing," Hansard said. "But the Cribbie? Sweet Jaysus."

Irglova also attempted to speak, but the Cribbies Orchestra -- a member of the Cribbies Administration in the back of the room with a boom box -- shooed her off the stage.

JUNO and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN weren't shut out; the teen-pregnancy comedy won three awards, including Best Actress (Ellen Page) and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Garner). However, screenwriter Diablo Cody -- who used to be a stripper -- was shut out, losing in the Original Screenplay category to ONCE's John Carney. "Snap to my Lou, me hearties, I'm 'Once' bitten, twice fly! I'm a cautionary fail!" Cody shouted, gnashing her teeth at the orderlies who wheeled her away. "THIS IS ONE DOODLE THAT CAN'T BE UNDID!"

Meanwhile, Joel and Ethan Coen accepted their Best Director Cribbie for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN with delirious enthusiasm. "This is by far the best thing that's ever happened to us," Joel Coen said, an infectious grim creasing his face. The brothers then made a witty and enjoyable 25-minute speech.

The coveted Get It On awards were won by Nathan Fillion of WAITRESS and Marisa Tomei of BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD. The two performers hoisted their awards -- glasses of the finest Jack Daniels sippin' whiskey -- and clinked them together; within minutes they were canoodling in a corner.

In honor of the Cribbies' tenth anniversary, the Cribbies Administration has established the Cribbies Canon, a selection of movies from the Cribbies' first ten years that truly represent what the Cribbies are all about. Based on voting by Crib members, twenty films have been inducted into the Canon, from 1999's surprise Best Picture winner HENRY FOOL to 2007's Best Director-winning CHILDREN OF MEN. The films range from THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS, which won 6 awards in 2003, to DONNIE DARKO, which was never even nominated for a single Cribbie, due to the fact that in its eligible year only two Crib members saw it.

This year's inductees into the Cribbies Hall of Awesome are Catherine Keener, Val Kilmer, Viggo Mortensen, Emma Thompson, and crotch-kicking.

HONEST TO BLOG ON THE HAMBURGER PHONE, FRIEND-O!
Cribbies Spurn Onetime Darling Apatow for 'Juno,' Coens; Voters Asked to Weigh In on Cribbies Canon

The Virtual Crib spread the love in the Tenth Annual Cribbie Nominations, Celebrating Achievement in Filmmaking, Acting and Hotness. While JUNO and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN dominated the proceedings, with eleven and ten nominations, respectively, five other films racked up five nominations or more. The pack of runners-up was led by fellow Best Picture nominees MICHAEL CLAYTON (seven noms) and ONCE (six), with HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX a surprise contender with six nominations, though the big prize eluded it. Rounding out the Best Picture nominees were THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and RATATOUILLE.

Though Paul Thomas Anderson's THERE WILL BE BLOOD collected five nominations, including Best Director, the hotly-debated film failed to earn a Best Picture nomination and, in fact, almost was nominated for Worst Fucking Thing, according to Cribbies insiders. Academy Award nominee ATONEMENT failed to achieve nominations anywhere other than the prestigious Get It On categories, where it garnered an unmatched three nominations.

The Best Picture nomination for RATATOUILLE was a sharp turnaround for Cribbies voters, who just last year were anti-rat, giving the award for Worst Fucking Thing to that fucking rat at the end of Departed. This year's Worst Fucking Thing nominees are BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS, SPIDER-MAN 3, and the end of I AM LEGEND.

Notably absent from the major nominations was former Cribbie winner Judd Apatow's KNOCKED UP, tabbed by Cribbies insiders as a front-runner for this year's big prize after the writer-director's THE 40 YEAR-OLD VIRGIN won six awards two years ago. While KNOCKED UP did collect five nominations, they were all for its actors, and the film was even shut out of the screenwriting category.

A total of 29 films were nominated for Cribbies, an impressive total considering how everyone spent the entire nomination period bitching about how they didn't see any movies. Other films that performed well in today's nominations included WAITRESS, whose three nominations included Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay; SWEENEY TODD, whose four nominations included Best Actress; and Quentin Tarantino's half of GRINDHOUSE, which got Tarantino his first-ever Cribbie nomination for Best Director. Upon hearing the news, the director spoke excitedly about the proud history of the Cribbies for seventeen consecutive minutes.

Some surprising nominations include NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN's for Best Music, considering that the Coens' film had none, and the Get It On nomination for
That One Guy With the Abs -- Which One Was It -- Oh Yeah, All of Them, in the sword-and-sandals action movie 300. With a Get It On nomination for I'M NOT THERE, Cate Blanchett moved all alone into third  place all-time with her ninth nomination. Meanwhile, two multiple nominees are close behind, with seven each; longtime Cribbie fave Kelly Macdonald, who earned her first award way back in 2002 for GOSFORD PARK, scored three nominations this year. And Matt Damon, whose first nomination was in the Cribbies' first year, for SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, picked up two this year for THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM. "I'm proud of all seven nominations," Damon told reporters, "with the possible exception of my nomination for Best Bit Part in 2005, when I was nominated as a puppet version of myself who could only retardedly slur my own name, in TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE."

Among the 23 nominees for inclusion in the Cribbies Hall of Awesome are Viggo Mortensen, Tom Waits, Jane Adams, and Crotch-kicking.

In honor of the Cribbies' tenth anniversary, the Cribbies Administration is sponsoring the first ever voting for the Cribbies Canon, the selection of movies from the Cribbies' first ten years that truly represent what the Cribbies are all about. Included on the list of 100 nominees are every film nominated for Best Picture and Best Director in the Cribbies' first ten years, plus a selection of other worthy nominees. The films run the gamut, from 50 FIRST DATES to YOU CAN COUNT ON ME. Cribbies voters will be asked to vote for one favorite film, which is guaranteed a spot in the Cribbies Canon, as well as up to ten others they believe worthy of inclusion.

So now, it's time to vote! An official ballot will follow this press release. Send Dan your votes before the night of SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2007 at MIDNIGHT. The Cribbies winners will be announced immediately after those other, less prestigious awards on the 24th.

Thanks to all of you who sent in your nominations. Even if you didn't have a chance to nominate anything, though, PLEASE be sure to vote! It's your participation that makes this fun. And feel free, everyone, to campaign for your favorites -- though it would be swell to keep the family-threatening to a minimum.
