Winslet All-Time Cribbie Champ; Two Inducted Into Hall of Awesome
Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry's ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND swept through the Cribbies this evening, winning a record eight Cribbies and blowing away the competition. Its nearest competitor, Alexander Payne's wine-soaked comedy SIDEWAYS, won three, while Zach Braff's directing debut GARDEN STATE won two awards. In a remarkable unanimity of Cribbie opinion, no other film won more than one award.
ETERNAL SUNSHINE won awards for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Male Bit Part (David Cross), Best Ensemble Cast, and Best Cinematography, as well as the two awards won by star Kate Winslet. Winslet, who joins Peter Jackson as the only individuals with five career Cribbies, won her third coveted Get It On award, as well as her first ever Best Actress prize. Such was ETERNAL SUNSHINE's domination of the star-studded ten-minute awards ceremony that the film's cast and crew, sozzled after drinking all eight awards -- glasses of Jack Daniels sippin' whiskey -- soon occupied the most rambunctious table at the ceremony. Jim Carrey, the only one of the film's principals not to win in his category, was repeatedly heard to ask his co-stars to "keep it down," as the Cribbies are "a serious event."
In the other half of the coveted Get It On awards, Johnny Depp won his second straight prize, this year for FINDING NEVERLAND. In other closely-fought awards, Tina Majorino of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE defeated Daryl Hannah of KILL BILL VOL. 2 for Female Bit Part by only one point, the same margin by which GARDEN STATE's Peter Sarsgaard defeated SIDEWAYS' Thomas Haden Church for Best Supporting Actor. And Best Actor was even closer, with two excellent performances ending up tied: Don Cheadle's in HOTEL RWANDA, and Paul Giamatti's in SIDEWAYS.
This year's inductees into the Cribbies Hall of Awesome are Peter O'Toole and the short films of Steve Alexander.
SEVENTH ANNUAL CRIBBIES NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED
Winslet Becomes Most-Nominated Woman Ever; "Eternal Sunshine," "Sideways" Lead the Way
"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry's romantic head trip, led the way in the Seventh Annual Cribbies Nominations, Honoring Achievement in Filmmaking, Acting, and Hotness. "Eternal Sunshine" scored ten nominations, among them Best Director, Best Picture, and five acting prizes, including a coveted Get It On award. Kaufman scored his third nomination, and Kate Winslet her sixth, seventh, and eighth, making her the most-nominated woman in Cribbies history. Trailing behind "Eternal Sunshine" was fellow Best Picture nominee "Sideways," boosted by five acting nominations among its four primary cast members. Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill Volume 2" improved on Volume 1's two nominations with a surprising six, though the top prize eluded it.
Joining "Eternal Sunshine" and "Sideways" as Best Picture nominees were nominee Richard Linklater's "Before Sunset"; "Hotel Rwanda," with nominees Don Cheadle and Sophie Okonedo; triple nominee Brad Bird's animated adventure "The Incredibles"; and British rom-zom-com "Shaun of the Dead." Nominated for Best Director alongside Bird, Linklater, Gondry and Alexander Payne of "Sideways" were Alfonso Cuaron of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and newbie Zach Braff of "Garden State."
This year's prestigious Get It On nominations were evenly spread across twelve different films; five of the six actresses nominated, however, were also nominated for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress, including Julie Delpy ("Before Sunset"), Sandra Oh ("Sideways"), Uma Thurman ("Kill Bill"), and Winslet. Cate Blanchett, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for "The Aviator," was given her first Get It On nomination for "Coffee and Cigarettes," presumably for the Coors Light-style adventure her dual role implied.
Matt Damon also received two nominations -- sort of. His nods for "The Bourne Supremacy" (Get It On) and "Team America: World Police" (Bit Part or Cameo) mark the first time anyone has been nominated both as himself and as a puppet doppelganger who can only retardedly slur his own name. Joining "Damon" in the Bit Part categories were such unexpected nominees as Tina Majorino ("Napoleon Dynamite"), Curtis "Booger" Armstrong ("Ray"), and Tour de France champ Lance Armstrong ("Dodgeball"), who was nominated despite having cancer of the testicles, which spread into his brain.
The Worst nominees this year included a number of surprises, as actors racked up unlikely doubles: Jim Carrey, Best Actor for "Eternal Sunshine" but Worst Actor for "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events"; Kirsten Dunst, Best Ensemble Cast for "Eternal Sunshine" and Worst Actress for "Wimbledon"; Ben Stiller, Best Ensemble Cast for "Anchorman" and Worst Actor for both "Meet the Fockers" and "Along Came Polly."
The category formerly known as Best Guilty Pleasure has, on the advice of official Cribbies Administration counsel, been officially renamed Tastes Great, Less Filling. This year's nominees are the twice-nommed "13 Going on 30" and "Anchorman"; three-time nominee "Dodgeball"; superfreak adventure "Hellboy"; surprise Get It On non-nominee Lindsay Lohan's "Mean Girls"; and "50 First Dates," which is especially beloved by the Cribbies administration because it's basically "Eternal Sunshine," but chock full of Hawaiiana.
Finally, for the first time ever, the Cribbies administration will allow Virtual Crib member to vote on inductees for the Hall of Awesome. This year's twenty-four nominees include Drew Barrymore, Willem Dafoe, David Paymer, and the late Ossie Davis.
So now, it's time to vote! Send in your votes before SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2005 at MIDNIGHT. The Cribbies winners will be announced immediately after those other, less prestigious awards on the 27th.
Thanks to all of you who sent in your nominations. Even if you didn't have a chance to nominate anything, though, PLEASE be sure to vote! It's your participation that makes this fun. And please, everyone, be sure to campaign for your favorites -- though it would be swell to keep the family-threatening to a minimum.
