THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM FOR "LORD OF THE RINGS"
Although First, Second Times Were Also the Charm

In a star-studded ceremony lasting only ten minutes, the sixth annual Cribbies for achievement in Filmmaking, Acting, and Hotness were awarded this morning. For the third year in a row Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS was the overwhelming winner, with THE RETURN OF THE KING taking five awards back to New Zealand. The burly Kiwi drank all five of his awards -- glasses of Jack Daniels sippin' whiskey -- immediately upon receiving them, and spent the rest of the evening asleep in his chair.

Trailing far behind THE RETURN OF THE KING with two awards each were the Guest & Co. comedy A MIGHTY WIND, Sofia Coppola's LOST IN TRANSLATION, and Jerry Bruckheimer's career pinnacle PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. LOVE ACTUALLY, nominated for both Best Picture and Worst Picture, was apparently just okay, as it finished last in the balloting for each award.

After roaring through the 2002 and 2003 Cribbies like the Army of the Dead through Sauron's forces, THE LORD OF THE RINGS found its path to major awards a little more rocky in 2004. In fact, until the final day of voting, the epic trailed Jeffrey Blitz's documentary SPELLBOUND in Best Picture balloting. A flurry of last-minute votes dropped the dark horse into second place, although spelling bee savant Georgie Thampy did collect one award for the much-loved documentary. The Best Actor and Best Actress races went down to the wire as well, and in both cases LOST IN TRANSLATION came up short: IN AMERICA'S Samantha Morton edged out Scarlett Johansson for her second Cribbie, and PIRATES' Johnny Depp snuck past Bill Murray. In an unprecedented sweep, Depp also won the coveted Get It On award.

The two performers inducted into the Hall of Awesome for 2004 are:
Francis McDormand (LAUREL CANYON, FARGO, ALMOST FAMOUS)
Julie Walters (CALENDAR GIRLS, BILLY ELLIOT, EDUCATING RITA)

SIXTH ANNUAL CRIBBIE NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED
"Lost in Translation" Leads "Rings" In Race For Gold

The Sixth Annual Cribbies Nominations, Honoring Achievement in Filmmaking, Acting, and Hotness, heralded something of a turn of the tide in the tastes of the Virtual Crib. For the first time in three years, a "Lord of the Rings" film did not lead the nomination count. Instead, Sofia Coppola's LOST IN TRANSLATION, the follow-up to her thrice-nominated debut, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, racked up ten nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and a prestigious Get It On nomination.

It remains to be seen, however, if Coppola's quiet comedy can topple the reigning heavyweight of the Cribbies. Peter Jackson's epic THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING did manage to collect eight nominations, and -- given its sweeps of the last two years -- must be considered a favorite for the awards it's up for in 2004, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director, as well as two prestigious Get It On nominations.

The Get It On nominations were dominated by LAUREL CANYON, which rocked and rolled its way to three nods, for stars Kate Beckinsale, Frances McDormand, and Alessandro Nivola. When asked about the nominations, the Cribbies administration affirmed that "Holy shit, that movie was sexy."

Cribbie history was made today as, for the first time, a film was nominated for both Best Picture and Worst Picture. Apparently, Richard Curtis' romantic comedy should have been called LOVE/HATE ACTUALLY, as enough voters felt passionately about the movie -- in both directions -- to give it the unprecedented double nod.

Joining LOVE ACTUALLY in the Worst categories were CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE, which garnered three Worst nominations, and THE MATRIXES, which collected two. Other notable Worst nominees included Oscar nominees Djimon Hounsou (for IN AMERICA) and Charlize Theron (for THE ITALIAN JOB, not MONSTER), as well as Robert McNamara, playing himself in THE FOG OF WAR.

Joining LOST IN TRANSLATION, LORD OF THE RINGS and LOVE ACTUALLY as Best Picture nominees were two surprising picks, both documentaries. Andrew Jarecki's CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS and Jeffrey Blitz's SPELLBOUND became the first documentaries ever nominated for the Cribbies' big prize. It was quite a year for nonfiction film, as Blitz and THE FOG OF WAR's Errol Morris were also nominated for Best Director, and SPELLBOUND even received a nomination for Best Male Bit Part or Cameo.

Notably, the Bit Part awards were split into Male and Female categories in 2004, meaning that there was extra room for unlikely nominees like God-loving Georgie Thampy from SPELLBOUND, Kiefer Sutherland's voice in PHONE BOOTH, and "Lip my stockings" call girl Nao Asuka from LOST IN TRANSLATION.

In other Cribbie firsts, Bruno the Dog, from THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE, followed last year's trailblazer Giant Baby/Hamster by becoming the first dog ever nominated for a Cribbie, landing a nod as Best Supporting Actor. ANGELS IN AMERICA became the first TV movie ever nominated for Cribbies, picking up three nods in all, including Best Ensemble Cast. The Cribbies recognized comedic performances this year, as ten of the 22 major nominated actors were given nods for comedic roles. And while it took the Oscars 75 years to nominate three women for Best Director, it's only taken the Cribbies six year; CITY OF GOD co-director Katia Lund joins Sofia Coppola in this year's nominations.

So now it's time to vote! Send in your votes before FEBRUARY 28, 2004 at MIDNIGHT. The Cribbies winners, as well as 2004 entrants to the Cribbies Hall of Awesome, will be announced immediately after those other, less prestigious awards on the 29th. Thanks to all who sent in your nominations. Even if you didn't have a chance to nominate anything, though, be sure to vote!
